Ukadiche Modak (Steamed Modak)
The classic steamed rice-flour dumpling filled with coconut and jaggery, offered to Ganesha.
Modak is considered Lord Ganesha's favorite sweet, and is traditionally prepared during Ganesh Chaturthi. This is the classic steamed version made with a rice-flour outer shell and a coconut-jaggery filling.
- 1
Prepare the filling
Cook grated coconut and jaggery together on low heat until thickened; add a pinch of cardamom powder and let it cool.
- 2
Prepare the dough
Bring water, a pinch of salt, and a little ghee to a boil, then stir in rice flour and cook until it forms a smooth dough.
- 3
Shape the modaks
While the dough is still warm, take small portions, flatten into a disc, and pleat the edges into the traditional modak shape.
- 4
Fill and seal
Place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery filling in the center and gently seal the pleats at the top.
- 5
Steam
Steam the modaks for 10–12 minutes until the outer shell turns slightly translucent.
- 6
Offer
Offer the modaks to Ganesha while warm, then share as prasad.
